Mumbai, September, 2019: A forty-five years old Gaurang Shroff, who was suffering from skin psoriasis for a quite a long time. He was fed up with psoriasis, an autoimmune skin disease that causes inflammation and scaling of the skin. With over 100 patches of dry, flaky skin, it was itching which made his life miserable. Initial treatment by his dermatologists could not bring him much relief. On the advice of a friend, he chose to give Naturopathy a chance and that helped him to get back a healthy life.
Shroff joined Nirvana Naturopathy and Retreat, Igatpuri for the treatment of skin psoriasis that causes inflammation and scaling of the skin that affects approximately 2 per cent to 2.6 per cent of the population.
Essentially, Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. In normal condition, skin cells grow and replace themselves in a month. But in the case of psoriasis, skin cells fail to do that and that creates painful conditions for the patients. Shroff’s immune system was to blame for this traumatic condition.
Dr. Suunita, BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Science) and Healer at Nirvana Naturopathy and Retreat, Igatpuri, said, “Shroff came to us with itchy dry skin, small bumps, inflamed and bleeding patches. He was also suffering from depression and joint pain. It took us nearly 15 days to manage his disease and make him normal healthy again. At Nirvana Naturopathy and Retreat, Igatpuri, first of all, we put our patients on a special diet to treat psoriasis. Our experience tells us that the right diet does a miracle in such a condition. Another important intervention was keeping the skin moist most of the time.”
According to a Global Report on Psoriasis by WHO, the prevalence of psoriasis in countries ranges between 0.09% and 11.43%, making psoriasis a serious global problem with at least 100 million individuals affected worldwide.
“Initially, after diagnosis, my doctor prescribed some topical steroids and cortisone creams. I was told by my dermatologists that these medicines would help ease the itch and inflammation, but It would never be cured. I was very depressed to know that the disease would follow me for the rest of my life,” said Shroff.
Living with such a terrible itching condition, he continued to look for an option to get rid of the disease. He first tried some home-made remedies and avoided foods that cause inflammation. But it did not help. The disease was reducing his self-esteem every day.
“One day a friend told me about Nirvana Naturopathy and Retreat, Igatpuri. First, I didn't believe that Naturopathy can cure psoriasis without modern medicine and treatment. After a few days, I decided to give Naturopathy a try without any hope. With the right diet and treatments like mud therapy, colon therapy I started feeling better within a few days,” he added
In modern medicine, common management of the disease includes prescription creams & medicines, UV light therapy, Sunscreen, Moisturizer containing ceramides. But in Naturopathy, apart from the right diet, the treatment includes mud therapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, acupressure, meditation, and yoga.
“I was a bit uncomfortable initially, especially with the food. Later on, I realized that treatment is working as the itching was much reduced. It was the time I decided to go wholeheartedly for Naturopathy. After 15 days of treatment, I came home with only a few spots and I am strictly following the expert’s prescription. I am very grateful to Nirvana Naturopathy and Retreat and doctors for giving me back a healthy life,” Shroff recalled.
According to the naturopathy expert, several known factors can trigger the onset of psoriasis or make it worse. These factors include bacterial infections, stress, sunburn, smoking, and some medications. Consumption of processed and pre-packed food regularly could also be the reason. When the immune system attacks healthy skin cells, it results in Psoriasis.
Skin psoriasis has a severe effect on the quality of life and mental health. Naturopathy treatment can be truly life-changing. It helps a lot in winning a battle against pain, irritation, aches, itching and overall to get rid of a stigma associated with such a visual skin condition.
