October 17, 2016 Mumbai: Ace photographers Atul Kasbekar, Prasad Naik and Colston Julian came
together at Mehboob Studios, Bandra on October 15 and 16, to support the cause
of girl child education by raising funds for Project Nanhi Kali. As part of
this unique initiative - titled Proud Fathers For Daughters - the three
photographers captured the unique and loving bond between various fathers and daughters.
Actors Saiyami
Kher and Pooja Hedge attended the event with their fathers to lend their
support to girl child education and Project Nanhi Kali. India’s top tennis
player, Mahesh Bhupathi and his daughter Saira also created some magical
moments for the expert lenses of the three photographers.
Indian Idol
Meiyang Chang supported Proud Fathers For Daughters by gifting this photo-op to
a friend’s husband and daughter. This year 9 Nanhi Kalis and their fathers were
gifted the photo-op by generous donors.
At the end of two
days 126 father-daughter duos and 9 Nanhi Kalis had posed for their portraits.
The funds raised at this event will support 275 Nanhi Kalis!
“The
Proud Fathers for Daughters event is one of the most endearing events at
Project Nanhi Kali . It truly is heart-warming to see the fathers thoroughly
enjoying the event with their daughters while our celebrity photographers
capture beautiful portraits. We remain indebted
to Atul Kasbekar who helped us conceptualise this innovative way to spread
awareness and raise funds for the cause. We are especially grateful to Atul and
Colston Julian and Prasad Naik who spent the entire weekend taking amazing
photos without charging any fee. We are also extremely grateful to all the
people who have chosen to support us by registering for this photo-op or
gifting one to their friends and Nanhi Kalis. This has enabled us to support
275 more Nanhi Kalis and secure them with a brighter future” says Sheetal
Mehta, Trustee and Executive Director, K.C. Mahindra Education Trust.
The event was the 3rd
edition of the successful campaign that began in 2014 and saw Atul Kasbekar and
Dabboo Ratnani clicking father-daughter pairs. Many top celebrities have also lent
their support to this initiative in the past by posing for Atul Kasbekar’s
expert lens. They include Anil Kapoor and daughter Sonam Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor
and daughter Ridhima Kapoor, Javed Akhtar and daughter Zoya Akhtar, Sachin
Tendulkar and daughter Sara Tendulkar, Leander Paes and daughter Ayana, as well
as Alyque Padamsee and daughters Raell and Shazahn Padamsee.
About
Project Nanhi Kali
The programme
facilitates girls to attend school, thus ensuring their holistic development
through the provision of academic, material and social support. At the Nanhi
Kali academic support centres, private tuitions are conducted after school
hours. These classes help to bridge the gaps in teaching and learning and
enable children to reach their grade specific learning competency. Material
support consists of a kit typically comprising of two sets of uniforms,
undergarments, shoes, socks, a school bag, stationery, note books and even
hygiene material for the older girls. The content of the material kit differs
region to region and also takes into account the items provided by the
respective state governments. Social and moral Support entails, the Project
Nanhi Kali team to work closely with the community, sensitising them on the
importance of girl child education and against various social evils like child
marriage and gender discrimination. The community members are encouraged to
take ownership of the functioning of the school. Events are oganised wherein
the community members, especially women, participate actively. Thus, we provide
a much needed platform to change mindsets and negative attitudes towards the
girl child. To know more, please visit www.nanhikali.org.
