Demise of former TT star Pappu Haldankar

by Suman Gupta   Former international table tennis player Prafulla Haldankar, popularly known as Pappu Haldankar passed away  on Tuesday  morning due to cardiac failure after being hospitalised on November 14, 2016. Pappu Haldankar started playing table tennis for Deccan Gymkhana, Pune and represented India for 5 years from 1961 to 1965.  He was ranked 1 st  in India in the year 1961-62 and represented the country in two Asian Championships and two World Championships. fter retiring from the game he was the coach of Indian Railways for many years.  He worked for Western Railway and retired in 1995 as Chief Welfare Inspector from DRM office Bombay Central. Pappu Haldankar is survived by his wife Sangeeta P. Haldankar, two sons Ketan, Satej, daughters-in-law and grandsons.

In CII budget recommendations Dr Forbes said that the focus has been on how to encourage and improve private investment as most of the indicators are looking up except for the private investment. Therefore, we need to work on a strategy on how to get private investment flowing into the economy, he said.   CII suggested that the government should draw up a plan and a strategy of disinvestment of 100 public sector units and work on revitalisation of the current PPP projects. Airline commences daily flights to its 11th  gateway in the U.S. by Suman Gupta Tuesday, December  2016 – Mumbai  – Emirates launched its  11th destination in the United States with the start of a daily nonstop passenger service between Dubai and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport today. A VIP delegation and a contingent of international media were aboard the inaugural flight, which carried passengers from North America, the Far East, the Middle East, South Asia, the Asian subcontinent and Africa. Fort Lauderdale is Emirates’ second destination in Florida, after launching Orlando more than a year ago. by Suman Gupta Mumbai, December 29:    Mumbai youngster Sanjeev Nair (ELO 1899) recorded a stunning win against GM Hesham Abdelrahman (ELO 2408) of Egypt in an  Open event third round match of  the 2 nd  IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Chess Tournament and played at the Mount Litera International School at BKC, Bandra. The 19-year-old Sanjeev played a fashionable line with the white pieces against GM Abdelrahman's Sicilian Najdorf play. A couple of minor inaccuracies by the Egyptian allowed Sanjeev to unleash a powerful attack that ended in a spectacular victory. Notably, Sanjeev was playing a Grandmaster for the first time in his career. Another Indian who tasted success over a GM was Bihar's Saurabh Anand who defeated his Armenian sixth seeded opponent GM Karen Movszszian.
